Our extensive endoscopic services provide modern diagnostic capabilities for your pet.
Endoscopy is a medical procedure that allows our veterinarians to get a visual of your pet’s internal organs. An endoscope is a long flexible tube with a camera attached. We insert the endoscope into your pet’s throat or rectum to search for abnormalities or loose objects. We promise we’re gentle as can be. If you’re concerned about your pet’s well-being and think we should take a look, call 780-444-1324 to book an appointment.
Nope! We use anesthesia so they do not feel the endoscope entering their body. Prior to surgery we do physical exams to check your pet’s health. Our veterinarians will do bloodwork to determine their ability to handle anesthesia.
Our veterinarians are very thorough. When your pet is recommended for an endoscopy, it’s likely because they’re experiencing abdominal pain, vomiting or diarrhea. These symptoms may indicate they have swallowed something or have a medical condition that needs further inspection. We use an endoscope to explore your pet’s esophagus, stomach and colon. We search for foreign objects (e.g. toys, fragments of household items) or inflammation. Objects may be removed and infected areas can be sampled for a proper diagnosis.
You can take your pet home right after the procedure, which usually lasts 30-40 minutes. While the procedure is painless, they may experience nausea and have weak legs. Give them some extra attention when you get home. It also helps to have their favourite meal ready. Endoscopy requires your pet to fast 12 hours before surgery for a squeaky clean visual. They’re going to be hungry and deserve a nutritious treat.
